What is the room arrangement at SPOP/T-SPOP/ISO? How do I get from John Wayne Airport to my Orientation? How do I make hotel arrangements? Why am I able to select gender information during the reservation process? Are there any housing accommodations made for the night before a SPOP/T-SPOP/ISO?
How will information about orientation be sent to me? Why am I not getting any confirmations/emails?

What is the New Student Orientation Service Project? Will I still have a choice of classes to choose from if I attend a later SPOP? I am an international student and visa restrictions prevent me from entering the US in time for SPOP. What should I do?
Do freshmen have to attend orientation? What can I expect at orientation? Yes, all new freshmen are required to attend orientation. Most incoming freshmen will attend SPOP. New international freshmen who did not go to high school in the U.S. will be required to attend the International Student Orientation (ISO) instead of SPOP. International Freshmen who did attend high school in the U.S. will have the option of attending SPOP or ISO. Freshmen participating in CAMP or Summer Bridge do not attend SPOP or ISO.
SPOP and ISO offer a comprehensive orientation to UCI. Academic advising and enrollment in classes are included in SPOP. Students attending ISO will make arrangements for alternative academic advising and enrollment in classes during the summer before they attend ISO.
Campus tours, social activities and meeting current and new UCI students are also available at both SPOP and ISO. You can attend SPOP with or without your parents/guardians. ISO is for new international freshmen students only and does not include a parent/guardian component.
Students who attend ISO and will be living on campus during the academic year will be able to move into their academic year residence immediately following ISO, one day earlier than the general student population.
Are academic advising and class enrollment included in SPOP? Yes. Academic Advising is one of the many benefits of attending SPOP. You will receive the advising that is required for you to register for your classes during orientation.
Are academic advising and course enrollment included in ISO? No. Because ISO takes place late in the summer, it is too late for academic advising and class enrollment. Students who attend ISO will make arrangements with academic advisors in the schools of their majors to receive academic advising via the web or over the phone and enroll in classes earlier in the summer. Instructions on how to arrange academic advising and class enrollment will be provided when you sign up for ISO.
ISO does include an academic advising review session with an advisor from the school of your major, as well as other sessions regarding academic culture and what to expect in the classroom.
What is included in the SPOP/ISO fee? The SPOP student fee includes overnight accommodations, 4 meals and program costs. If participants bring a car they must also pay for parking. The cost of parking is $24 for a two-day one-night permit. Parking permit cost is subject to change.
The parent SPOP fee, to attend the second day of SPOP, includes light continental breakfast, coffee, tea, lunch and program costs. Parking is an additional $10 per car for a single day permit. Parking permit cost is subject to change.
The ISO fee includes overnight accommodations for two nights, 7 meals and program costs. If participants bring a car they must also pay for parking. The cost of parking is $30 for a three-day two-night permit. Parking permit cost is subject to change.
What is the room arrangement at SPOP/ISO? Within each residence hall there are single sex suites only for students who attend SPOP or ISO. We recognize that the male/female dichotomy does not reflect all gender identities. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer a gender-neutral housing option at the program. If the male or female options do not meet your needs, please contact us at orientation@uci.edu and we will work together to find appropriate accommodations.
*If you have questions about aligning your gender Identity with the information submitted to the Office of the Registrar, please contact the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Resource Center (LGBTRC) at 949 824-3277 or visit www.lgbtrc.uci.edu Also, the LGBTRC is working closely with the UCI Housing departments to create options that are accommodating for the gender variant. Contact us for more information.
Can Transfers attend SPOP? For new transfer students seeking a more in depth orientation, we are offering a small number of spaces in our new 2-day / 1-night Transfer Student Parent Orientation Program (T-SPOP) to transfer students. This program combines with the final Student Parent Orientation Program (SPOP) for new freshmen, but will also include elements designed just for new transfers. T-SPOP does not include academic advising. Space in this program is quite limited, so sign up as soon as possible if you would like to participate in an over-night orientation program. The date for T-SPOP is August 22 - 23.
What is Transfer Success? The 'Transfer Success' orientation seeks to promote a smooth and successful transition to life at UCI by exposing transfer students to the various resources and services available on campus. In addition, new students will have an opportunity to meet current UCI students and learn the 'survival secrets' from the pros!
This is an optional program and does not include academic advising. Many academic units will offer advising in the afternoon of the July Transfer Success dates (after Transfer Success). If offered for your major, make an appointment for your required academic advising and make a day of it here at UCI! Advising appointments will be offered on a first come, first serve basis.
Whether or not you can attend Transfer Success, academic advising is still required before you can enroll in classes.
What is included in the Transfer Success fee? The Transfer Success fee ($35.00 and non-refundable) includes lunch and program costs. Parking is an additional $10 per car for a single day permit.*
*Parking permit cost is subject to change.
How do I sign up for Academic Advising? Can I receive academic advising at Transfer Success? Because it is difficult to advise transfer students in large groups, academic advising is not part of the Transfer Success program. However, many academic units coordinate advising sessions with the Transfer Success programs that take place in July, so it may be possible for you to attend Transfer Success and receive academic advising in the same day. Whether or not you are attending Transfer Success, all transfer students must make an appointment for academic advising.
To make an academic advising appointment, or to inquire if an appointment can be made for the same day you attend Transfer Success, contact the school of your major. Phone numbers for all of the schools can be found at the link below:
http://students.uci.edu/orientation/academicnumbers.php
Why is there a fee to attend orientation? The orientation programs are self-supporting. We do not receive any funding from the university. Like all other departments on the campus, we pay for room rental, room set up, audio visual equipment, tables, chairs, room and board for participants and staff, and all printed program materials.
What is included in the orientation fee? The SPOP student fee includes overnight accommodations, 4 meals and program costs. If participants bring a car they must also pay for parking. The cost of parking is $24 for a two-day one-night permit.*
The parent SPOP fee, to attend the second day of SPOP, includes light continental breakfast, coffee, tea, lunch and program costs. Parking is an additional $10 per car for a single day permit.*
The ISO fee includes overnight accommodations for two nights, 7 meals and program costs. If participants bring a car they must also pay for parking. The cost of parking is $30 for a three-day two-night permit.*
The Transfer Success fee includes lunch and program costs. Parking is an additional $10 per car for a single day permit.*
*Parking permit cost is subject to change.
Are there scholarships for the orientation programs? Partial scholarships are available for SPOP students only. We do not offer scholarships for Transfer Success, ISO, T-SPOP, or for parents at any program. Scholarships are based on need and meeting all prior deadlines through Financial Aid. If you qualify for a SPOP scholarship, your rate will be automatically reduced when you sign up.
To qualify for a SPOP scholarship you must have: 1. Filed a 2013/14 FAFSA by March 2, 2013. 2. Submitted all requested documents to the financial aid office by the specified deadline. 3. Have a complete financial aid file. 4. Have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) that meets the scholarship criteria.
Please do NOT contact the financial aid office with questions regarding orientation scholarships.
Please visit https://www.ofas.uci.edu/visualaid/ to determine if your financial aid package has been completed. Only completed financial aid packages are eligible for scholarships.
I received a scholarship but I already paid full price for the session. How and when do I get refunded? Please contact us at orientation@uci.edu or (949) 824-5182.
Is parking free? No. You will have to purchase a parking permit at the parking structure upon arrival.
A SPOP permit will cost you $24 if you are parking for two days and one night.*
An ISO permit will cost you $30 if you are parking for three days and two night.*
For parents/guardians attending SPOP, T-SPOP, or anyone attending Transfer Success, parking is $10 per car for a single day permit.*
*Parking permit cost is subject to change.
What if I cannot afford to pay for Orientation? We understand that not all students can afford to pay the reservation fee for orientation. In many cases, students who have difficulty with the reservation fee will have qualified for a scholarship rate (SPOP only). The scholarship rate to attend SPOP is $180 and is for students only. If a student qualifies for a scholarship, the discounted price will show on Step4a of the reservation process. There is no parent scholarship rate and no scholarship rate for Transfer Success, T-SPOP, or ISO.
Whether or not you qualified for a scholarship, if you cannot afford the reservation fee, you have two options. Anyone can sign up for the program with a deferred payment. This means you can attend orientation this summer, but will not be required to pay for it until the fall. The deferred payment option is available when you make your reservation.
The second option is to request an exception. The Orientation Exception Request Form can be accessed through the reservation process on Step4a when your reservation window opens. After an exception request has been submitted, it will be reviewed and you will be contacted for more information within 3 business days.
If an exception is granted, you will not be required to attend orientation, and will make arrangements for alternative academic advising and course enrollment with the school of your major.
Do I have to pay for orientation now? You are encouraged to pay for orientation with a credit card when you signup. If you cannot pay for orientation now, you can opt for a deferred payment. The option to defer your orientation payment is available to you when you make your reservation. You will have to agree to the terms and conditions of a deferred payment to select this option. These will be presented if you choose a deferred payment when you make your reservation.
How do I know If I qualify for the scholarship for SPOP? You qualify for a partial scholarship if you have a complete Financial Aid file and meet certain criteria. A reduction in rate will automatically be applied to your final bill if you qualify. If you have any other questions, please let us know.

For SPOP and ISO schedules, visit:
http://www.students.uci.edu/orientation/schedules.php
Do parents have to attend orientation? No. While parents/guardians of new students are welcome at SPOP, T-SPOP, and Transfer Success, they are not required to attend.
Unfortunately, due to space constraints, there is no parent program at ISO.
Can I bring more than 2 parent/guardians or a brother or sister? Spacing is limited and only available to students and 2 parents/guardians. If you require additional parent/guardian spots at SPOP, T-SPOP, or Transfer Success, please contact our office to see if an exception can be made at orientation@uci.edu or (949) 824-5182
Can I make a reservation for Summer Orientation over the phone? No. We will only accept reservations for orientation online.
Online reservation for orientation will be available on May 28th at 4:00pm for select populations (Athletes, CHP Students, students registered with Disability Services, Veterans, Reservists, & ROTC students (except for UCI Army ROTC), and transfer students). Reservation windows* will begin opening for all other students beginning June 3rd at 4:00pm. You will be contacted with your reservation window prior to May 28.
All reservations will be processed in the order they are received by our office. All confirmations will be sent via email unless otherwise noted.
* Reservation windows will be organized by the school of your major. As such, later windows will not be at a disadvantage in securing an orientation space. Space in orientation is constrained by major, so students will only be competing with other students from their major for space.
Why didn't I get my first choice for orientation dates? Unfortunately we are limited in the number of students and parents we can accommodate at each orientation. If your first choice is full, please try to find another program to attend or add yourself to the wait list.
Is there a waitlist for SPOP? Yes, you can add yourself to the waitlist of as many programs as you like. Only programs that are currently full are available to be waitlisted. If academic advising for your school is unavailable at a program, you will not be able to waitlist that program.
Please Note: If space becomes available for you in a waitlisted program you will be notified via email with a link to the reservation form. You will have 48 hours from the time of the offer to accept the space and complete your reservation. If you fail to accept the space in that time it will be offered to the next person on the waitlist and you will be moved to the bottom of the list for that particular program. Please be sure to check your email often so you do not miss an offer.
The waitlist will be available through the reservation process on Step4a as soon as any program has filled. It can also be found on your MyOrientation page.
What if I cannot make it to any of the orientation dates? Orientation is required for all incoming freshmen, so you are strongly encouraged to arrange your schedule to accommodate a program. If this is absolutely impossible, you can request an exception. Please note, documentation will be required in order for an exception to be granted.
The Orientation Exception Request Form can be accessed through the reservation process on Step4a. After an exception request has been submitted, it will be reviewed and you will be contacted for more information within 3 business days.
If an exception is granted, you will not be required to attend Orientation, and will make arrangements for alternative academic advising and course enrollment with the school of your major.
Can I change the parent/guardian who is signed up to attend Orientation? Yes. If you would like to change the parent/guardian attending (i.e dad instead of mom), please email orientation@uci.edu and provide the name, e-mail address, and special accommodation requests (e.g. mobility assistance, translator request, dietary restrictions/needs) of the new attendee and who they will be replacing. DO NOT submit a change or cancellation request.
When can I sign up for Orientation? Reservations for orientation will be available online on May 28th, 2013 at 4:00pm for select populations (Athletes, Campuswide Honors Students, students registered with Disability Services, Veterans, Reservists, & ROTC students (except for UCI Army ROTC), and transfer students).
Beginning June 3rd, 2013 at 4:00pm windows to make a reservation for all other students will begin opening. Students will be assigned a reservation window based on the school of their major.
Your Orientation Reservation Window will be sent to you on Thursday, May 23 from orientation@uci.edu.

How do I get from John Wayne Airport to my Orientation? We suggest taking a taxi from John Wayne Airport to UCI. Click on the link below for printable directions and a map.
SPOP, T-SPOP, and ISO student participants should park or be dropped off in Lot 5.
Transfer Success participants and parents/guardians attending Day 2 of SPOP/T-SPOP should park in the Student Center Parking Structure.
Directions to both locations can be found below.

Why am I able to select gender information during the reservation process? Information that we pull from registrar data can sometimes be inaccurate and not reflective of ones gender identity. Though you cannot change gender related registrar data through the Orientation reservations process*, we ask that you review your gender information for the purposes of bed assignments during orientation.
We understand that not everyone identifies as either male or female. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer a gender-neutral housing option at the program. If the male or female options do not meet your needs, please contact us at orientation@uci.edu and we will work together to find appropriate accommodations.

How will information about orientation be sent to me? All correspondence regarding orientation will be sent by email to your UCI email account. Please check this account regularly. If you have not received any messages regarding orientation at this account, please check your junk mail.
To ensure that you receive messages regarding orientation, add the following addresses to your approved e-mail list:
orientation@uci.edu
orientation-exceptions@uci.edu
orientation-needs@uci.edu
Why am I not getting any confirmations/emails? Due to the automatic nature of the emails we send out, sometimes our emails are thought of as SPAM/Junk. If you haven't received a confirmation email within one day of completing a reservation, please check your Junk folder. When it becomes available, MyOrientation is a good resource for following up on your reservation.
How do I register for Placement Testing? You should take your placement tests before your Orientation program. Testing events are held the day before each of our programs. You may register for any test you need at any testing event before your Orientation program. You may register for Placement Testing when you register for SPOP at the Orientation site or you may register through the Academic Testing Center's website.
See Summer test dates here: http://www.testingcenter.uci.edu/summertestspopdates.html
Find out what tests you need to take here: http://www.testingcenter.uci.edu/require.html
What if more than 1 member of our family will be starting at UCI this year? Please sign up each student individually for orientation. UCI wants to make sure that every new student receives academic advising before enrollment in classes begins. Our current Summer Orientation registration request website can only accommodate 1 student per order. Please place reservations for any additional students separately.
I will be attending the Freshmen Summer Start Program, do I still need to attend SPOP or ISO? YES! Please note that Freshmen Summer Start Program (a Summer Session program) runs independently from Orientation. Choosing to participate in FSSP is not a substitute for your required participation in Orientation (SPOP or ISO), nor does your participation in FSSP give you priority for any specific Orientation dates. If you are planning on attending SPOP and FSSP, please make sure you plan accordingly and sign up for an early date (the first 4 programs are before FSSP). If you are unable to secure a space in one of the early programs, please work with your professors to take time off from class to attend your mandatory orientation.* Visit the Summer Session website for more information about the Summer Start Program.
*Depending on the parts of the orientation program that overlap with your class(es), it may be possible to attend orientation, leave the program to go to class, and return when your class has ended.
What do I do if I want to change my major? You may request a major change through the Admissions office. The deadline is May 31st, at 9 a.m. Submit your request through your MyAdmissionsApplication@UCI account via the Message Center. Your admissions counselor will notify you if your request is approved. Approval depends on whether you qualify for that new major and if the new major is accepting major changes.
Note: Biological Sciences, while available until May 31st, will be closed to new students after that date.
Majors not accepting new students now, or after May 31st, are Business Administration, Dance, Dance Choregraphy, Dance Performance, Music, Music Performance, Music Theatre, and Nursing Science.
If you wish to change to any of these majors after the fall 2013 quarter begins, you will need to meet the UC Irvine Change of Major criteria.
Some majors (with the exception of those listed above) are open after the May 31st deadline and will accept major changes during the summer.
You MUST attend the academic advising session for the School of the major you are changing into. This means that your current School and the School you plan to change into must both be present at the program you attend (i.e. If you are a history major and want to switch to criminology, you will need to attend a program where both Humanities and Social Ecology are present).
Exception List
Arts: To change majors to Dance, Dance Choreography, Dance Performance, Music, Music Performance, or Music Theatre, you are required to pass an audition. Please contact the Claire Trevor School of the Arts Student Affairs office for more information.
Biological Sciences: Biological Sciences will NOT be processing major changes.
Business: Business Administration will NOT be accepting major changes. Change of major applications will be accepted in the Spring quarter of the student's sophomore year. Please be advised that completion of the prerequisite courses (see the General Catalogue) does not guarantee admission into the major; space is very limited. Interested students are welcome to consult the Merage School directly with additional questions: ugprograms@merage.uci.edu and may come in for advising in MPAA Suite 226.
Engineering: Engineering will NOT be processing major changes.
Nursing Science: Nursing Science will NOT be processing major changes.
ICS: The Business Information Management (BIM) major is limited to 40 entering freshmen per year. Although a joint major with the Paul Merage School of Business, all enrollment management and academic counseling is handled by the Bren: ICS Student Affairs Office. Entering freshmen who are interested in changing into BIM should add their name to the BIM interest list by contacting the Bren: ICS SAO (see below). As space permits, students will be admitted to the major by competitive review and notified prior to the start of fall quarter. As an alternative, freshmen interested in BIM are also encouraged to affiliate immediately with the Bren School as an ICS Undeclared Pre-Major. For information, contact the Bren: ICS Student Affairs Office at ucounsel@uci.edu, or by calling (949) 824-5156.

Contact us for more information.
What is my school code? Your school code is a two to four digit code that indicates the academic school you will be advised under during orientation (freshmen only, there is no academic advising for transfer students at orientation). For the most part, this code should match the school under which your major is housed.
Please refer to the list below to identify your school code:
ART: The Claire Trevor School of the Arts BIO: School of Biological Sciences BUS: The Paul Merage School of Business HS: College of Health Sciences* HUM: The School of Humanities ENG: The Henry Samueli School of Engineering ICS: The Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences PH: Public Health PHAR: Pharmaceutical Sciences PS: The School of Physical Sciences SE: The School of Social Ecology SS: The School of Social Sciences UU: Undecided / Undeclared
What is a UCInetID and what is the LOGIN process? UCInetIDs are usernames assigned to students for UCI e-mail and for authenticating (logging in) to certain campus websites. It is not the same as a StudentID. A student named Annie Anteater might have a UCInetID like "aanteate" and a StudentID like "#12345678".
New students who have not yet activated their UCInetIDs can do so at http://activate.uci.edu/ after they have been contacted by the Office of Information Technology (OIT) in early May for freshmen and early June for Transfers.
What is the New Student Orientation Service Project? SPOP is participating in a food drive for the Orange County Food Bank. Please bring any of the items below to Check-in on Day 1 of your SPOP! All items will be donated to the Orange County Food Bank. - Jar of peanut butter - Cans of tuna or chili
Will I still have a choice of classes to choose from if I attend a later SPOP? While classes do fill up on a first come, first serve basis there will be options whenever you attend! You may not get your first choice in time or day, but all academic areas have NOR (New Only Reserved) sections of classes that only freshmen can get into. Academic areas also open more class sections if they can during the summer as classes fill. You will always need general education classes to fulfill your 180 units here for a degree and you have many other quarters to get all the classes you need. At SPOP you are only choosing classes for Fall quarter. There is also the opportunity to add classes in September. Many students adjust their schedules creating openings.
I am an international student and visa restrictions prevent me from entering the US in time for SPOP. What should I do? If you are an international freshmen and you did not attend high school in the United States, you are required to attend the International Student Orientation (ISO) in September. International freshmen who did attend high school in the United States will have the option to attend either SPOP or ISO.
If you cannot attend any orientation session, including ISO for international freshmen, you will need to request an exception. This can be done from within the reservation process on Step4a. If an Exception for orientation is granted, you will be contacted with information on how to sign up for alternative academic advising.
International students who attended high school in the U.S. are encouraged to attend SPOP. If you are coming to UCI from another U.S. school (for example, high school or language program) you will receive a SEVIS transfer I-20 from UCI, you are able to stay in the U.S. during the summer months. You may also travel outside the U.S. and return anytime during the summer.
